Cola has shared a new song, “Bitter Melon,” via a lyric video. The single is out now via Fire Talk and is available as a flexi disc (accompanied by a zine). Listen below.
Cola consists of former Ought members Tim Darcy and Ben Stidworthy and Evan Cartwright (drummer with US Girls and The Weather Station). Their debut album, Deep In Viewreleased in 2022.
Darcy said of the new song in a press release: “This started with a demo that Ben brought. The vocals and lyrics naturally came from the backlit atmosphere of the music. I wrote what was almost a novel (incarnated in the companion magazine we've released) where a person wakes up in the middle of the night and studies the “gloss”—additional comments written in the margin of a book. In my mind the text was like the skin of a fruit surrounding something, perhaps written at an earlier point by the reader himself. The drum machines and strumming guitars are driven by the bass in this song, which isn't unusual for us, but the bass really delivers a catchy long-form melody to this song. The piece has the energy of a full moon or some kind of fertile dark/productive spirit looking at the earth to me”
