Eminem's “Stan” has become one of the most iconic songs and music videos of the 2000s — its title even inspired a popular term to describe diehard artists' fans that is still used today. But according to the director's protagonist Dr. Dre, Devon Sawa, the rapper almost went in another direction when he chose the title of the project.
“They went to Macaulay Culkin first,” said the Canadian actor Entertainment Tonight in an interview on Wednesday (April 17). “I think they wanted him, and he wasn't available, or he didn't want to do it or whatever.”
“Then Dre, who he had just seen Final destination and he was a fan, he suggested [me]Sawa added. “There just happened to be someone at the casting who knew someone who was friends with me and they called me that… and it worked out really well.”

In the eight-minute music video, Sawa plays the character of Stan, an obsessive Eminem fan who gradually becomes angrier and more violent with his pregnant girlfriend (portrayed by Dido, who also appears in the track) when the rapper doesn't reciprocate. in his letters. After bleaching his hair and wearing a white tank top to impersonate the “Not Afraid” artist, he goes so far as to drive his car off a bridge with his girlfriend strapped to the trunk.
“It's also one of the proudest things I've been a part of,” Sawa said of the project. “I'll never forget it, I was told on the day that I'd lip it. I remember, after the first take I did, Dre ran over and said, “That was good, but can you try it with a bit of a beat this time?” And I said, “Oh my God.” And that's how the day went.”
