Smooth as melting snow, “Summertime Blues,” a new collaboration from Chris Lake and Sammy Virji, is a house anthem for emotional renewal.
The song flourishes with the pensive vocals of The Boxer Rebellion's Nathan Nicholson, whose painful lyrics yearn to escape the clutches of the past. His poetic musings on shedding the frozen weight of winter amidst nature's rebirth shine over Lake and Virji's effervescent house beats, creating a paradoxical fusion of melancholic introspection and infectious beats.
Nicholson laments the bittersweet sting of lost time before intoning a mantra of emotional renewal: “Memories are useless, I have to let them go.” On the drop, his undulating vocal movements are punctuated by fizzy stabs of synth, urging us to dance away the winter blues.
While house music superstar Lake needs no introduction, the new single arrives amid a real breakout for Virji, who is leading the UK's garage music boom in the US. With an energetic and bubbly sound all his own, the London-based beatsmith has exploded as he continues his debut North American tour, which has taken him to major club stages from San Francisco to Miami.
“Summertime Blues” is out now via Astralwerks and Lake's Black Book Records. Listen below and find the new collaboration on streaming platforms here.
