Shakira opens up about her outlook on love after her split from the professional footballer Gerard Pique.
“I can't say that I don't believe in love because I see the example of my parents after 50 years together. how they look in the eyes and hold hands and can't live apart,” the “Hips Don't Lie” superstar shared in a new cover profile with Marie Claire. “I've witnessed love, I've just not been so lucky myself. Monogamy is a utopia.”
He added that love has many forms. “But I've been compensated in other ways, with the love of my fans and my kids and my true friends,” he said. “Oscar Wilde said that friendship is the purest form of love, and I think that's true. Lasts longer – at least in my experience. My relationship [lasted] 12 years but my friends will be there for life. When the difficulties came, that's when I learned how important friendship was.”
The former couple announced their separation in June 2022 via a joint statement. “We regret to confirm that we are separating. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy,” the statement reads. Shakira and Piqué were together for 11 years.
Over the past year, many rumors surrounding the end of the couple's relationship have been doing the rounds – from cheating allegations to jar of strawberry jam. Shakira has since turned the pain into music, taking hard aim at Piqué on her Bizarrap collaboration “BZRP Music Sessions #53,” which peaked at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart and eventually broke 14 Guinness World Records.
