Portland singer/songwriter Henry Chadwick returns tomorrow with his new EP, Leaving. Chadwick first debuted with his EP in 2016, Guest in the House, and the complete 2018 record, Marlin Fisher. More recently, he followed up with a 2019 EP, The President of Make Believe, and the second LP of 2021, We All Begin Again. Along the way, his music has touched on loose rock, indie and power pop, hinting at influences such as Wilco or Elliot Smith.
“I started recording this EP as I moved out of state from my old home in Ben Lomond, California in the Santa Cruz Mountains to my new home in Portland, OR,” said Chadwick. “Leaving it records a time of much change and introspection. Writing and recording it was actually kind of therapeutic and felt really good. I tracked most of it in my new basement studio at home, which I call The Washateria Recording Studio, which also lends its name to the indie label I started this year, Washateria Recordings. I feel like Leaving it's my most consistent release, where all the songs share a similar theme and feel. It's not necessarily a concept album by design, but listening back it kind of feels that way.”
Today, ahead of the EP's release, Chadwick shares an early listen of one of the record's highlights, “That's On You,” which premieres on Under the Radar.
“That's On You” is a breezy ballad colored by sunny guitar chords and a glowing solo. At times, the track evokes the sonorous and unexpected side of bands like Big Star, delivering delightful vocal melodies wrapped in a sunny glow. The results are sweet, but also exciting and meditative. Chadwick's lyrics find him reflecting on selfishness and bitterness, examining the tendency to blame your problems on someone else: “When the bridges you burned won't get you across / And the stones you threw start to gather moss / If still you can't connect the dots / This is for you.”
Chadwick says of the track, “I got an idea while I was waiting in traffic and someone was speeding past everyone and honking. We've all had patience and we become less patient as you do when we're stuck in traffic, but something about seeing someone react so flawlessly to it made me at first angry with them and then think about what a tendency like that is. of us have to – feel like everything bad is happening TO US, especially when there really are a ton of other people waiting in the same traffic. That was the spark and when I got home, it all came together.”
