Tyla has shared that she “always wanted to see an African pop star”.
The South African singer-songwriter, who released her self-titled debut album earlier this year, has revealed what motivated her to become a professional singer.
“My parents always told me that I hated losing,” Tyla told Elle in a recent interview. “Whenever I wanted something, I found a way to get it.”
The Water hitmaker went on to share that she “always” wanted to see a successful artist who represented her as an African woman.
“I feel like it’s in me, but also I’ve just always wanted to see an African pop star. What the heck?” she said. “I want to see an African on the biggest stages. I want to see them winning awards next to the A-listers.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the 22-year-old opened up about what she sees herself doing in the future.
“I don’t see an end, really,” she said of her music career. “Let’s say years from now if I stopped making music, I definitely see myself getting into other things like acting or fashion.”
The Been Thinking singer continued, “I don’t see it stopping. I just see it getting bigger and bigger and bigger.”
