Lana Del Rey closed out the first night of the Hangout Music Festival on Friday night by introducing Jelly Roll for a duet cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's “Sweet Home Alabama.”
Taking the stage together, the two performed a loose, upbeat rendition of the 1974 Southern anthem, with some improvised interjections, such as when Jelly Roll shouts “We love you, Lanita!” For her part, Del Rey changed some lyrics, omitting the “Southern Man” reference to remind the crowd that Neil Young “crushed that meat into the ground.”

For the song's most controversial verse, both Del Rey and Jelly Roll seem to slip up on the lyrics, awkwardly missing the timing of George Wallace's lines but sticking the landing to join in unison on “Watergate don't bother me.” Other than that, going into the chorus' repeated refrain, it's clear that the performers were having a good time.
As the band made its way out, Jelly Roll bowed to Del Rey and exited the stage. Del Rey then thanked the crowd and said, “This is really where my fucking heart has been since I was 16.” It's unclear exactly what he was referring to, but last year he went viral for spending time at an Alabama Waffle House. Elsewhere in her Hangout set, Del Rey introduced other special guests, including Tommy Genesis for “Peppers,” Benson Boone for a cover of her “Beautiful Things,” and Nessa Barrett for a cover of her “American Jesus.”
Up next, Del Rey has several live shows in the US and Europe, including a performance at Boston's Fenway Park on June 20 (get tickets here).
As for Jelly Roll, their own 2024 tour will run through the end of October. Secure your seats for their shows here.
