The first gentleman out this summer Destiny 2: The Final Shape, an expansion of the free-to-player multiplayer looter-shooter destiny 2, originally released in 2017. The online game from the developers of Bungie (creators of Halo) is a collaborative sci-fi epic whose ongoing story has evolved greatly over the past eight years to create a fairly dense mythology. For the uninitiated, it can be a little daunting to fully understand the lore, but with the base game and, now, all previous expansions available for free, there are plenty of opportunities to learn the story so far.
The game has seen its ups and downs with its previous expansion last year Lighthouse, drawing a tepid response and widely accepted as a step back from the celebrated reinvention of 2022, The witch queen. Now, just two years after being acquired by Sony, the studio is trying to bring players back into the world Destiny 2 in a big way. As a paid expansion to the free-to-play base game, it offers new locations, enemy types, and subclasses to reinvigorate its gameplay for older players while remaining accessible to beginners.
Online multiplayer shooter games like Destiny 2 live and die in these kinds of updates, and the Bungie team has recalibrated their model to move away from the seasonal releases (every three months) that most live service games follow. Instead, The final shape you'll see episodic updates more akin to the big PC game expansions of old, delivering major changes to the game every few months instead of the slow trickle of constant updates. The first of three episodes, Echoit will drop just one week after its initial release The final shapegiving players a chance to familiarize themselves with the world and new mechanics to catch up before the next big three-act story begins.
For fans of PvE (player vs. enemy) and PvP (player vs. player) online shooters, this expansion may prove to be the magic bullet that brings new and old players into the fray. As the supposed final expansion of the “Light and Darkness Saga”, it is the culmination of the entire 10-year DESTINY journey so far and will determine what's next for the series' future.
