Bat for Lashes, Natasha Khan's music project, began as a personal refuge during her time working in a card packaging factory after completing her A-levels. Her last LP, The dream of Delphiis particularly significant as it marks her first release since becoming a mother, a transition that is reflected in the album's themes and dedication to her daughter, Delphi.
The album opens with the title track, “The Dream of Delphi,” which begins with slow, repetitive synth chords. These basic elements quickly evolve into a more ethereal soundscape as Khan's harmonies cover them. The inclusion of a xylophone and harp adds to the dreamlike quality of the piece. About two-thirds in, the track introduces processed beats, enhancing the surreal atmosphere before concluding with haunting strings, creating a fitting tribute to the young Delphi.
Another song dedicated to his daughter is “Dancing Delphi”. The intro to this song evokes the tension of a scene from “Stranger Things,” where the students of Hawkins High are on the brink of danger. However, the mood soon changes as 80s-inspired synths give way to a calm and innocent piano sonata, illustrating the carefree nature of a child dancing, free from lurking threats.
Instrumental tracks like “Her First Morning” subtly relate to the early stages of Delphi's life. The piano creates a Christmas soundscape, accompanied by delicate strings, evoking an unexpected seasonal feeling for an album released in May. Similarly, “Christmas Day” carries a sweet, but non-seasonal vibe, and while it doesn't directly reference Delphi or her motherhood, it fits seamlessly into the album's narrative.
“The Midwives Have Left” masterfully navigates a variety of emotions, combining calm and joy through piano melodies with the subtle anxiety of EDM elements. “Breaking Up” stands out as the bassiest instrumental, fully embracing the 80s influences with its synth and saxophone arrangements.
“Home,” the only song on the album with a lyrical and pop structure, stands out as the outlier in The dream of Delphi. The inspiration behind the LP is evident through the song titles, although the themes are not always clear without this context. Despite this, the relaxing soundscapes transport the listener, making a coherent concept unnecessary. While the album undeniably has a feminine edge, its appeal is universal, offering soundscapes that anyone can enjoy.
