Painted in 1968, the abstract piece was traded for an astrology chart
When Bob Dylan lived in Woodstock, NY, he took up painting. After trading one of those pieces for an astrology chart 50 years ago, the piece has now sold for $196,156 at auction.
RR Auction announced the release on Friday, May 24th, which coincidentally happened to be Dylan’s birthday as well. It sold over the weekend. Dylan had painted it around 1968, while he was working with The Band. RR Auction described the piece as a “colorful and energetic abstract composition featuring the large central outline of a bull. The canvas is filled in with captivating abstract shapes and patterns combined with recognizable imagery, including music notes, bow ties, animals, and segmented features. At the top is the red outline of a man in a brimmed hat—mirroring his own style during his Woodstock days…”
Dylan’s astrology chart, for which he traded the painting, was done by local woman Sandy Lepanto. Author and professor of NYU’s Bob Dylan course Ann Margaret Daniel described LePanto as “one of the most beautiful women in Woodstock at a time when there were many; she was a mystic, a channeler, a reader of stars, and maker of astrology charts for her friend.”
The painting had been in LePanto’s family until it was rediscovered in her former husband Anthony LePanto’s estate.
