Sophie Ellis-Bexter performed her hit “Murder on the Dancefloor” brought back to life at WeHo Pride 2024. Talk to Billboard about how the LGBTQ+ community has supported her throughout her career, her US tour, a new album in the works, and more!
Sophie Ellis-Bextor:
I know there will be some young people who will only know me as the lady from “Murder on the Dance Floor.” But to be honest, that's absolutely fine with me. “Murder on the Dancefloor” is very much the kind of thing I do. I've been doing pop disco since I started. So if you're intrigued and want to find more, there's plenty of that.
I can credit almost everything about my performance to my relationship with my LGBTQ+ audience because it was those shows I did that really crystallized and helped me feel safe on stage: excited and relaxed. But I do believe that if you are able to act and feel confident, it is an incredible gift to act. So yes, my lack of inhibition is entirely due to them.
My children are delighted. What I love about pride is that it links you to the past, present and future; I really think your message is still very relevant. It is a very inclusive, supportive and warm audience. I know we talk a lot about being your authentic self to the point where we don't really think about what that means. But really, being able to feel comfortable in your own skin is one of the most important things you can do for someone, right?
