Hi, you have have you heard of Chappell Roan? Sorry, sorry, we know you've probably been conscious at some point in the last six months, that's okay. Her debut, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, came out last year, but people weren't quite ready for it at the time. Now, with the release of Song of the Year nominee “Good Luck, Babe!” and a career-making performance at Governors Ball, her gorgeous sparkling diamonds are everywhere. (Just ask Jimmy Fallon, who admitted to Googling her before guesting on The Tonight Show last week “to see” what came up. “You didn't know who I was before?” he hilariously said.)
It's okay, everyone knows now. With her career exploding—perhaps a little too quickly—her new fans have stuck hard. It was recently discovered that a pre-famed Chappell was an expert on covers, with a hard even on Reddit list making over 50 videos. There, you'll find a variety of performances, from Rhianna (“Kiss It Better”, taking a note from Father John Misty) to Billy Joel (“Vienna», pleasant 13 Continued on the 30th fans).
Some songs he has covered only once, while others he has returned to several times. Take “Dreams” for example. Do we mean 'Dreams' by Fleetwood Mac or 'Dreams' by the Cranberries? Both, actually. The Midwest Princess took a liking to Stevie Nicks' masterpiece in late 2017, performing it several times that fall. But in early 2018, he changed that, facing the early 90s. Check out the clip below, where he performed it in March 2018 during an opening set for Declan McKenna.
“Our generation is pissed off and it's going to be so '90s—like, 'Fuck you.' We will stand up for what we really care about,” he said Rolling rock on March. “We're looking behind the curtain… Our generation is really standing up for what we love and that's representing itself in music.”
But ah, the seventies! While Roan was rocking Fleetwood Mac's “Dreams” on the road seven years ago, she put an official version on YouTube in 2020. Let's check it out.
So what's the best version of 'Dreams'? Artists have been covering these songs for years — they're classics for a reason. On the one hand, Chappell completely obliterates the Fleetwood Mac cover. She perfectly understands Nick's emotional rage and laments a storm of lost love that is hard to come by. But with the Cranberries, she takes on Dolores O'Riordan's vocals like few others. The Irish icon passed away in 2018, so it makes the show even more poignant.
Obviously, the answer is that we don't have to choose. Chappell excels on the covers because she applies her own campy flair to them. Instead of replicating songs and stripping them of their originality, she puts her own unique spin on them, à la Miley Cyrus and Kelly Clarkson. In addition, she has her own steadily growing catalog, a catalog where artists make their own covers. It's her year.
