OF LIMBO – ARTISTIC ATTENTION AND UNIQUE REVIEW
The awesome Californian band, Of Limbo, have just released an aggressive new single titled “California Demon”. We first met the band when we interviewed Jake Davies (vocals/guitar) in 2022 (see related below). With brother Luke (Guitar/Vocals), the Davies clan deliver tracks full of infectious riffs, devastating vocals and oversized attitude. Of Limbo emits melodies that assault the listener with groove laden beats filled with heavy yet melodic beauty. The brothers are originally from Melbourne, Australia, but currently call Long Beach, Ca. their house.
These boys know how to party. Every live show is a spectacle. They make sure all viewers dive deep into the frenzied rock they put out. They have opened for such impressive luminaries as Wolfmother, Hinder, Buckcherry and Joyous Wolf. I'm emptying him delivers high-energy antics combined with cheeky musical mayhem. Additionally, the Davies brothers constantly attack with fireballs of molten acoustic blasts. And leave no prisoners.
Their new single is no exception. 'California Demon' carries the Of Limbo hallmark of incendiary songwriting, insistent guitars and a beat that absolutely kills. The pace is dark and dangerous. The guitars rage with intensity. The vocals are downright menacing and the bass is pulverizing. The theme revives the old story of selling your soul to the devil to get the fame you crave. Speaking about “California Demon”, Luke Davies explains:
“The song explores the concept of 'selling your soul for fame and fortune', but in a literal sense. As if the devil were real and young, innocent and corrupt people actually come to Hollywood and sell their souls to become stars. There is a large segment of the population, like our conspiracy theory loving uncle, who believe this is 100% fact/reality. He sends us videos of stars in interviews, implying that they sold their souls, or the latest Grammy performances, etc. by Sam Smith or muttering rappers dressed as Satan. Our uncle doesn't think this is just fancy. He thinks this is all some kind of satanic ritual being televised. It's an idea we've always thought was perfect for a rock song. The innocent girl comes to Hollywood with wide eyes and high hopes, only to discover that she has to sacrifice much more than she bargained for… HER SOUL!
The song was recorded at Fab Factory Studios and produced by Mike Pepe (Taking Back Sunday, Plain White T's), mixed and mastered by Grammy winner Jett Galindo. The video for “California Demon” was directed by Tony Vercelli and filmed at Baur Films in Long Beach and Nuvisions Studios in Santa Ana. It was produced by Todd Grilli of 4th Street Productions. Speaking of the video, Of LimboJake Davies says:
“Yeah, we set Luke's guitar on fire while he was playing it at the end. We had to douse Luke with retardant spray and pray to sweet baby Jesus he didn't get 3rd degree burns. It was definitely super sketchy at times! On a few occasions I had to run in with a wet blanket to put out the flames.”
Of Limbo is a band about to break out. They have everything you need. Powerful songs full of turbulent chaos. “California Demon” just adds to its mystique Of Limbo. All you have to do is check out their older material to realize the full extent of their mind-blowing destruction. Just listen to 'Lets Go', 'Nicotine' or their reprise of Beastie Boy's 'Fight For Your Right' to discover their crazy elegance. You will not regret it.
