Galaxie 500 has announced a new compilation of files, Uncollected Noise New York '88-'90The double album is due out on September 20 via Silver Current Records, but to entertain fans, the indie rock group also shared two previously unreleased songs, “Shout You Down” and “I Wanna Live.” Listen to them below.
Uncollected Noise New York '88-'90 marks the first release of Galaxie 500 material in nearly three decades. Featuring B-sides, outtakes and non-album material, the compilation also features eight previously unreleased cuts.
“It’s so sweet to hear us finding our own sound, our own collective voice. The Proustian power of music,” bassist Naomi Yang said in a statement. “Listening to these early recordings, I can hear myself discovering how I wanted to play bass: finding my way up the neck to where the notes would stand out, where there might be a countermelody to singing. Making the bass my singing voice.”
“Opening those boxes of tapes was like looking through an old diary or journal,” added drummer Damon Krukowski. “I had completely forgotten that most of this had happened, but it only took a few quick details to get me back in the drummer’s seat.”
The newly released songs showcase two different sides of the legendary group. “Shout You Down” is a breezy, up-tempo indie punk piece that shows the band tapping into their inner Velvet Underground, while “I Wanna Live” is softer, though no less quirky.
“I understand why we left some of these songs in the vault, but it’s a pleasure to hear them today,” said singer and guitarist Dean Wareham. “They sound very alive, as if Galaxie 500 were playing in the brick-walled room that was Noise New York.”
