Prospective festival-goers at Sweden's Way Out West Festival, in the form of sperm and eggs, will soon be incubated to the sounds of its headliners, which once again include Fred… and Peggy Gou.
This is what the festival organisers have announced, who this week announced the creation of a new stage in collaboration with the well-known designer Love Hultén. The miniature stage, called “Future Fan Stage”, will be put into operation at Eliva, an IVF clinic in Stockholm.
Complete with colorful (albeit bland) visuals, the fully functional stage will be “injecting” live recordings of music from the festival's headliners into samples of unfertilized embryos “even before they become fetuses,” according to a release. blog entry shared by Way Out West. The festival cited recent studies showing that “music improves fertilization rates during an IVF process.”
The innovative installation takes the scientific effects of music quite literally. Hultén expressed excitement about the intricate layers of the stage design and said he was “fully committed” after the festival approved it.
“The Future Fan Stage was already a fantastic concept in theory and had many interesting design aspects,” said the Swedish audiovisual artist. “Combining elements of the laboratory world with visual elements of the music stage was challenging and fun.”
“With this bold and wonderful idea, we'll get future fans hooked on our festival with great live music even before they're created,” added Kimmie Winroth, Project Manager at Way Out West. “And if we're lucky, we'll even help make them a reality.”
For those who have outgrown their cellular way of life, this year's Way Out West Festival returns to Gothenburg's Slottsskogen Park from August 8-10. Passes can be purchased here.
