Wiz Khalifa made an unexpected detour to a Romanian prison over the weekend when the 36-year-old rapper (born Cameron Jibril Thomaz) broke the country's drug laws while lighting up one of his ubiquitous links on stage.
According to a press release translation from the Romanian anti-organized crime and terrorism agency DIICOT, “During a recital held during a music festival held in the resort of Costinești, Constanța County, [Khalifa] was in possession of more than 18 grams of cannabis (a dangerous drug) and consumed (on stage) another quantity of cannabis in the form of a craft cigarette. We clarify that, throughout the criminal procedure, the persons under investigation benefit from the procedural rights and guarantees provided by the Code of Criminal Procedure, as well as the presumption of innocence”.
Khalifa, a longtime, enthusiastic cannabis supporter was arrested after performing at the Beach Please! Saturday night festival in the nation where recreational marijuana is illegal. Videos posted by fans show Khalifa lighting a thick blunt on stage and is later accompanied by a phalanx of police as he says, “don't surround me… I'm not going anywhere… I'm following you,” presumably during his arrest.
The rapper apologized to X after the arrest, writing: “Last night was amazing. I meant no disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were respectful and let me go. I'll be back soon. But without much articulation next time.” The Hollywood Reporter reported that Khalifa was charged with illegal drug possession prior to his release from custody.
No additional information was available at press time regarding Khalifa's sanction in the incident or whether he will be required to return to the country in the future for a subsequent court date. A representative for the rapper had not returned a request for comment by press time.
Last month, Khalifa and her friend Aimee Aguilar announced that they are expecting their first child together. The couple did not reveal the due date of the baby girl, who will join the “Roll Up” MC's 11-year-old son Sebastian with ex Amber Rose.
