Daniel Smiththe former editor of Vibe magazine revealed Didi threatened her with harm over a dispute over the cover.
last Friday (July 12), Diddy was hit with another explosive allegation of violent behavior by a woman. In an article written for the New York Times by journalist Danyel Smith, who was the former editor-in-chief at Pulse Magazine, revealed that Diddy threatened her life in an argument over a cover photo he took. “Combs and I worked a lot together,” Smith wrote. “He fought, our way. So often I thought I came out on top. I was wrong. I had reason to fear for my life. What happened was insidious. It blew my mind. I forgot the worst for 27 years.”
Smith wrote that it all started with Diddy, aka Sean Combs, being asked to be on the cover of the magazine for the December 1997/January 1998 issue wearing white feathered wings. While the shoot in September went well, everything changed soon after.
“Combs wanted to see the Vibe covers before they were pressed,” Smith continued. “It wasn't our policy to show covers before publication, so after I told him no, we heard he was planning to come to our office and force us to show him.”
This was around the same time after the murders of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious BIG, with a lot of heat on Diddy amid speculation that he was involved in Shakur's murder. Diddy would show up at her offices demanding to see the proofs, prompting her to escape while delivering them to editor-in-chief Jesse Washington. Undaunted, Combs called Smith the next day demanding to see the photos, which Smith politely declined.
“It was then that Combs told me, as I've said hundreds of times over the years, that he would see me 'dead in the trunk of a car,'” she wrote. “I didn't waste a minute, I told him he had to take that threat back. “Take it back,” I said, sounding like I was 10. “Getting back what?” Then, with a sly laugh,[Expletive] you,” Smith continued. “Take it back now,” I said. “Or I'll call my lawyer and you'll go to jail.” He said, “I know where you are right now. Right in Lexington [Avenue].”
Combs later faxed an apology after calling her lawyer. Didi has not responded to press inquiries about the article.
