Big Sean is in album mode. She gave fans a taster on Tuesday (July 16) when she joined On the radar for a fiery freestyle over Aaliyah's 1996 classic “If Your Girl Only Knew.”
Rocking a DMX shirt, Sean wanted to salute another legend and “pay homage to one of [his] favorite singers ever.”
“I got better things to do than find somebody to laugh with/ Or else I'm off the deep end/ This game's gonna get you either way, you know it's offense-defense,” he raps.
The Detroit destroyer runs the two-minute sprint and calls out black activist Dr. Umar Johnson. “Trust when I see your dark side, I have night vision/ Dr. Umar is hard on white women,” Sean says to close out the freestyle.
The 'find someone to beef with' bar caused a stir on social media as fans speculated it could be aimed at Kendrick Lamar — after his feud with Drake — or Yewho tried to jump on the same beef.
Big Sean took to X to put an end to the narratives running rampant on social media, making him look like he was lashing out at his peers.
“I get so many narratives, I talk to haters just finding something to point out that they don't like me,” she wrote in a since-deleted tweet. “It's not even worth explaining because I'm just focusing on the music.”
subsidiary Kendrick DJ Hed claimed spoke to Sean and confirmed that the verse in question was not directed at K. Dot. “I talked to Sean. The bar was 'I've got better things to do then find someone to beef with' And it wasn't for Dot,” he tweeted. “The bar appealed to a different Gemini.”
Earlier this week, Big Sean previewed an unreleased track titled “Fighting Fires” produced by Ye (formerly Kanye West), which he said could be headed Vultures 2 — if it ever arrives.
Elsewhere on Monday night (July 15) IG Live sessionSean provided some insight into his Detroit 2 sequel, which could be coming sooner than fans think.
“You know what I love about this album? It's so many different sides of me,” she said. “It's multi-faceted, just like me. I meditate every morning, but I also took straps to the studio — no straps. I carry guns. [The album] It really represents what I've been through these past two years.”
Sean Don also admitted that he has quit drinking and is practicing sobriety, which he has a hard time with, especially with his partner Jhené Aiko on the road with their 1-year-old son.
“I just stopped drinking in 2022 because that was just getting me high,” he explained. “Anyone of you have similar problems with st, mentally, this mom – alcohol king – it's depressing, so if you're dealing with any kind of stress like me, I'm always thinking what should I do, how should I do this, what's next mr. etc. N—stay away from that alcohol, boy.'
Big Sean has three consecutive No. 1 albums atop the Billboard 200 entering 2020 Detroit 2 as his latest LP. He returned earlier this year with his single “Precision” and made features for Jessie Reyez and Eminem. The 36-year-old will also add “author” to his resume in October, when Go higher here comes the book that promotes mental wellness.
