Donald Glover is preparing for Childish Gambino's final act before Bando Stone & The New World enough, the multi-unit tested his taste buds Hot Thursday (July 18).
Glover has experimented with hallucinogens like ayahuasca, but didn't realize eating spicy chicken wings would be a comparable experience. “This is shamanic,” he told host Sean Evans. “I'm already feeling pretty intense. I feel like I'm going to do ayahuasca.”
In between eating some spicy wings, the 40-year-old put a bow on his Childish Gambino moniker. “My partner, the family and I, we talked a lot about the death of Superman … I always knew that Childish Gambino was like a character and on some level I wanted him to end,” he explained. “I almost feel like Childish Gambino is like the boss from The office, like “This thing worked 10 years ago.” That all worked, but now it's like something different. It's like, “Oh, it's kind of sad, but it's like, wow, the circle kind of continues, which is great, I think.”
A quick history lesson: Childish Gambino discovered his alter ego's name when he messed around with a Wu-Tang Clan name generator in college. At the end of the episode, Glover revealed what RZA told him about what the name meant.
“The Childish Gambino story from Wu-Tang Clan RZA told me it's a story of a kid who becomes a boss,” said the actor-musician, who earned his fifth Primetime Emmy nomination for acting on July 17. “This last ride into the sunset is for the fans. This is for you.”
Glover also went on to offer disgruntled fans refunds on his upcoming show, which is sure to upset his lawyers. “If this isn't the best live show you've ever seen — after the first song, if you want to go, 'I gotta go,' you can leave and I'll give you your money back,” he promised. “I care so much about all this. This is not funny. My lawyers will say, “It's funny,” but it's not funny. I'll arrange it for you to leave.'
The “This Is America” rapper is embarking on a world tour, which kicks off in Oklahoma City on August 11 with support from Willow and Amaarae.
After passing the hot wings, Glover credited his own Community co-star Joel McHale for helping him develop a tolerance for hot sauce.
“Joel literally only ate espresso and eggs because he had a shirt-off scene. It said “Hot sauce, it's the only flavor.” So I started putting hot sauce on everything and then we started fighting each other,” she captioned the post. “I realized, 'Oh yeah, that must have built up my tolerance.'
Bando Stone & The New World launches streaming services on Friday (July 19). Gambino's latest album is a genre-blending effort with guest appearances from Jorja Smith, Flo Milli, Yeat, Steve Lacy and more.
