Prime Big 2024 ended, capping a record year for Amazon. Still, 2024's second Prime Day bonanza was quite different from previous years — and it gives some insight into how people are spending their money right now.
For starters, this bidding event was bulky: according to the numerator annual Amazon Prime Day Trackermore than 188,000 items were purchased during the sale and Prime members was saved over $2.5 billion. The average order size also increased from last year's Prime Day ($57.97 compared to $53.47 in 2023).
But even though people may have spent a little more this year, Prime Day shopping was very different. Instead of branded electronics and shiny new tech products, essentials were the top sellers this year with homewares and essentials being the top two categories. That meant some surprising staples appeared on the Prime Day top five products list, like Premier Protein Shakes, Liquid IV Packs, and Glad Trash Bags.
Although this does not mean everyone who added required products in the cart also did not receive any wanted offers as well. We've also seen an increase in beauty and wellness purchases, particularly viral TikTok skincare finds like the much-hyped COSRX Snail Mucin Serum. Shoppers were also more apt to grab deals this year from many retailers, with more than half (54%) saying they compared prices with competitors, many of whom were also holding sales events at the same time, according to Numerator (the 35 % bought Walmart deals this week , and 34% considered the target week of the cycle).
However, some used Prime Day as shoppers have done in years past, snapping up name-brand electronics and tech they may have seen for a while (i.e., Amazon Fire TV sticks were still the #1 best-selling item).
