[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers through the Season 4 finale of The Boys.]
Susan Heyward knows that the fourth season of Prime Video Boys is much more “direct”. As Sage says, the smartest person In the world (don't just say “woman”) her character is the mastermind orchestrating the political chaos that comes to a head in the Season 4 finale, giving her a front-row seat to the chaos on the ground.
“It’s really intense, other seasons were a little more subtle,” he says. ConsequenceBut because Season 4 is much more direct with its themes, she says, “It raised the stakes. It left no room for questions. I think it’s very confrontational with the audience, in ways that might not necessarily be as entertaining or as enjoyable, because it’s a little bit less of an escape.”
However, she continues, “In the end, I also think it presents us with the opportunity to be guilty, to say, ‘It’s funny, we can laugh at it, but these things are really happening. ’ And after we’re done watching it, after we turn off the computer, what are we going to do about it? I think it kind of leaves that question up to the audience, more so than before.”
Heyward and I spoke weeks before the season finale premiered on Prime Video, meaning neither of us had any idea that the episode would premiere just days after a real-life political assassination attempt. After that, Prime Video decides to change the title of the episode (originally known as “Assassination Run”) and add a warning at the beginning of the episode about the plot similarities being “completely coincidental and unintentional.”
Still, the episode now titled “Season 4 Finale” directly invokes the events of January 6, 2021, with Sage's plan coming to fruition with a newly selected president who will happily bow directly to Homelander (Antony Starr).
