“I wrote this song for my daughter's wedding,” he said. “I have a two-year-old child and we have a long time ahead of us”
Country songs for Dads watch their daughters get married, and — as Hank Hill once put it — “feelings” are a mini-genre at this point, from Heartland's “I Loved Her First” to “You'll Always Be My Baby' by Alan Jackson. Country newcomer Post Malone became the latest contributor to that micro-canon this week, debuting “Yous,” a track from his new album. F-1 Trisout August 16, at his Bud Light-sponsored show at Nashville's Marathon Music Works on Tuesday night.
In his introduction, Malone acknowledged that he may be leading the way: “I wrote this song for my daughter's wedding,” he said. “I have a two-year-old and we have a long way to go.” The ballad is, without a doubt, the most emotional (schmaltzy, some might say) of his entire career thus far, with Malone spending the entire song addressing his daughter's future husband.
After a steel guitar intro, Malone sings, “She'll break my heart when she gives you hers… She might be your better half, but she's my everything/ We'll both love her forever/ but her I loved long ago/ One day I know I'll give her away/ Man, that don't mean she's yours.'
Elsewhere on the set, Malone duetted with Blake Shelton on their single “Pour Me a Drink,” joined Sierra Ferrell for a cover of Johnny Cash and June Carter's “Jackson,” and played another track from his upcoming album, “Would You Hide My Gun,” featuring Hardy. In addition to “Pour Me a Drink,” F-1 Tris he previously produced the hit 'I Had Some Help', a duet with Morgan Wallen. Malone will be touring behind the album starting September 8th.
