They have been many unique historical events in the last two weeks or so, but undeniably — undeniably! — most notably the release of Katy Perry's “Woman's World,” her hilariously disastrous attempt at a comeback single. Thanks to its brain-dead lyrics (“sexy, confident/ so smart”), the AI-like chorus, and Perry's surprisingly tone-deaf choice to record a “feminist” song with Dr. Luke, the song prompted almost universal derision, and immediately failed.
In our new episode Rolling Stone Music now podcast, we look at exactly what makes the song so bad and what it could mean for Katy Perry's career, with Brittany Spanos joined by host Brian Hiatt. Elsewhere in the episode, Andy Greene helps us fend off some other ill-fated attempts at musical comebacks, from the Beach Boys doing a disco song to Nine Inch Nails' “Oh My God” to Guns N' Roses. Not to mention Robin Thicke's creepy anti-classic 'Get Her Back' from the pathetic concept album Paula, which Green calls “one of the most ill-advised things ever to happen on planet Earth.”
The episode concludes with a bonus discussion with author Steven Hyden about his new book, There was nothing you could do: Bruce Springsteen was born in the USA and the end of the Heartland.
