Sony might have screwed the pooch when they tried to give Marvel villains their own spin-off movies that no one asked for (Venom, Morbius, Kraven The Hunter, etc.), but Warner Bros. scored a golden ticket when Joker hits theaters in 2019. With the sequel just a few months away, it will be interesting to see if they can duplicate not only the box office receipts of the first, but critical acclaim as well.
Yesterday, Warner Bros. released the second trailer for Todd Phillips' upcoming film, which features Joaquin Phoenix's iteration of the Clown Prince of Crime and his “infectious” laugh. Takes place after the events of the first installment, Joker: Folie Ą Deux finds Arthur Fleck, aka The Joker, locked up in Arkham Asylum awaiting trial for his many crimes. Surprisingly, there he meets his new love, Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), who not only brings the music out of his soul but also dances with him to some interesting musical numbers.
While Zazie Beetz may have rebuffed Arthur's advances in the first film, it seems Lady Gaga is more than happy to return the Joker's feelings in the sequel and join him on a Natural Born Killers– an adventure that will lead to the Joker not only defending himself in court in full clown makeup, but also murdering the judge?! We can't wait for this musical.
