As Daktyl, like many artists, navigates the turbulent waters of a career in music, his new EP emerges as an indication of creative clarity.
With a distinguished career marked by collaborations with Diplo, What So Not and many other dance heavyweights, Daktyl remains the benchmark for independent electronic music. He reinforces that reputation with WaveNow available on San Holo's bitbird imprint.
The EP, which opens with “We Lost Track Of Time,” immediately sets a playful yet introspective tone. This song is a cascade of vocal rhythms and light, ethereal production, accented by calming ad-libs that envelop the listener like a comforting hug. It’s an invitation to let go and get lost in the haze of music.
The title track, “Wave,” featuring the talented Alice Ivy, sweeps with rhythmic vocal breaks and synth leads with Vocaloid-like textures. The song ebbs and flows, much like the emotional tides it aims to represent, pulling us along with its current. Meanwhile, “Idols,” a collaboration with Lizzy Land, takes the EP into funkier territory. Vibrant strings dance around pitch-shifting melodies, creating undulating tones that blend seamlessly with a kinetic undertone. It’s a song that vibrates with a sense of freedom and joy, inviting listeners to find their groove within the chaos.
Closing out the EP is “Little Light,” a song that cuts through the noise with its poignant lyrics and soulful vocal performance by Zeke Finn, whose lyrics paint a vivid picture of finding one’s true calling amidst the turbulence of modern life.
“This EP is an ode of sorts to that presence and the realization that it's the only thing that matters,” Daktyl said in a press release. “It was also born out of the realization that we have more control over our emotions and our actions than we're led to believe. Life can feel overwhelming and exhausting in modern times, but realizing that it's all just a wave is the first step to accepting it as it is and making the most of it.”
