Will Smith hit up Russ and his son Jaden about his latest single and sat down to talk Russ about the making of the song.
During the 7-minute clip, Smith admitted that he found his voice with this song. “'Work of Art' was the song where I found my voice,” he told Russ. “That's what I want to sound like, that's what I want to talk about. I had probably recorded 20 tracks before that and there was the old constellation of ideas about who I thought I should be that came out in the music.” He also touched on what inspired this new voice and sound of his. “It was really the first time in my life since I was a kid that I got kicked out,” Smith said of the media backlash he received after his infamous Oscar slap. “You know, I had a series of gods. It was like it was the first time I was really experiencing what it's like to be stepped on.”
Smith has debuted the first single from his upcoming project – tentatively titled Dance in your darkest moments — during the BET Awards. Last week, he told his fans that his first album since 2005 Lost and found it is done. While talking to Black Ribbon Allies, Smith said this will be his most personal project. “For the last year and a half, I've been in the studio,” he said. “I have a project that is the most personal and powerful piece of music I have ever done. The concept of the music is “Dance in your darkest moments”.
