R. Kelly he explores another route to get his freedom back. He's asking the Supreme Court to reconsider the federal sex crime case.
As spotted on TMZ, the disgraced entertainer may have a legal ace up his sleeve. This week, his lawyer Jennifer Bonjean confirmed that she has officially filed a petition asking for his case to be reconsidered. According to US Courts, a writ is a “request that the Supreme Court order a lower court to send the record of the case for review.” He's essentially making a statute of limitations argument where the acts he was charged with happened in the 1990s/early 2000s and he was charged under a law that didn't exist yet.
Jennifer Bonjean appeared TMZ and explained that this is not the first time this technicality has been brought to court. “Yes, we raised this issue pre-trial and it was dismissed,” he said. “The government's position is that they admit they ran a statute of limitations that did not exist at the time the conduct was allegedly committed. But they say that “we were allowed to extend it” nor did it “harm” or “violate” him.
R. Kelly was convicted of three counts of child pornography and three counts of solicitation in 2020. He was sentenced to 20 years and is expected to be released in 2045.
