Armed with nothing but attitude and a disregard for convention, ISOxo and Knock2 are as defiant as ever on their debut collaborative album, 4EVR.
Collectively known as ISOKNOCK, the duo have given birth to a mutant, a creature that shudders with the raw energy of punk-rock and the twisted aggression of trap and bass music. Equal parts beautiful and belligerent, this surprise album is an experience that leaves listeners feeling like they’ve been through some kind of metaphysical car wash, beaten and soaked in sound, but somehow cleaner for the experience.
ISOKNOCK stomp in with masks and spiked baseball bats as emergency alarms kick off the album opener, “THRASH (PARTY STARTER).” It’s not long before all hell breaks loose on a thunderous trap drop, where distorted synths writhe and shriek like banshees.
Much like ISOKNOCK’s middle-finger-raised live shows, the energy doesn’t let up from there. They follow up with “TROUBLE,” a nasty breakbeat banger; “ENERGY,” a floor-filling four-four track featuring Zimbabwean rapper and singer Bantu; and “SMACK TALK,” the duo’s fan-favorite collaboration with pioneering trap producer RL Grime.
In other places of 4EVRThe producers surprise with “BLIND,” a painful ballad wrapped in emotional anarchy. Trading bass for angst, they create a haunting breakup song that laments a relationship torn apart by broken promises. Here, Araya and Sur Black’s tortured verses meld into a chorus that howls with the anguish of a thousand deleted text messages.
ISOxo and Knock2 find clarity on the title track, “4EVR,” a visceral, trance-inspired song featuring Cade Clair’s anguished vocals. Lost in a haze of strobe lights and serotonin, he sings of numbed nerves struggling to process the electric touch of a stranger-turned-soulmate: “Can you hold on to me, tell me everything’s okay? I didn’t know I’d find love at a rave. Even if you touch me, I can’t feel it anyway.”
Now available through 88rising, 4EVR comes amid a meteoric rise for ISOxo and Knock2, who were named to the EDM.com Class of 2022 and 2023, respectively. Among other high-profile sets, the duo debuted in April at Coachella, where they performed in the festival’s iconic Sahara tent.
