Last year, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith went viral with a rendition of Thirty Seconds to Mars’ “The Kill” when he heard the song for the first time. As it turns out, he was challenged to do the same with Bring Me the Horizon’s “Can You Feel My Heart” as part of the same Drumeo visit.
The folks at Drumeo held onto Smith’s second rendition of “For the First Time” for about a year before posting it a couple of days ago. Meanwhile, the Chili Peppers drummer’s mastery of the Thirty Second to Mars track racked up a whopping 16 million views on YouTube.
The Bring Me the Horizon clip is also off to a fast start and has already garnered roughly 1.5 million views at the time of this posting. At the beginning of the video, Smith complains, “You gonna give me another one?”
They then played a drum-less version of Bring Me the Horizon. Everlasting track, and it was clear he was unfamiliar with the tune as he remarked, “What the hell is this?” However, that didn’t stop Smith from smashing the drums again in one take, adding a tribal beat to the metalcore track.
When Drumeo host Brandon Toews later asked him if he knew the song or the band, Smith guessed Ministry. When told it was BMTH, Smith again expressed bewilderment, exclaiming, “Who the hell is that?”
He was then played “Can You Feel My Heart” with the original drum track and played drums while listening to it. He praised BMTH drummer Mat Nicholls for his “huge sounding” drums with “cool parts.”
While Smith may not be familiar with Bring Me the Horizon, the band is one of the biggest acts to emerge from the UK this century, regularly headlining festivals and selling out stadiums. Their 2013 album Everlasting It is considered a modern classic.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers just wrapped up a summer tour, while Bring Me the Horizon has a series of dates scheduled in Asia and Latin America throughout the rest of the year (Pick up tickets here).
