Sabrina Carpenter i got a close look at how hard taylor swift rocked on stage when she opened for the Department of Tormented Poets headlines the Latin American, Australian and Singapore legs of Swift's Eras tour in late 2023 and early 2024. And in a new interview with VarietyCarpenter says what it came down to was one indisputable fact: “Taylor is a rock star!”
The comment came while the singer/actress was browsing the shelves at a Los Angeles record store and noticed that Swift's latest chart-topping album was filed away in the rock section. “She's such a gangster with her all from this. No matter what people say, everything I've ever seen her face, she's done with grace,” Carpenter added of the opening, which she's called “tour-dream-come-true-8403450″ target=”_blank”>dream come true.”
That dream came true, with Carpenter, 25, telling the magazine that Swift is now, “one of my best, best friends, and we get dinner or text and hang out like you would your best friend.”
The story also touches on her relationship with Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan. While Carpenter was tight-lipped about the details, she revealed that the actor was absolutely thrilled Basic Instinct-video-inspired treatment for Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Please Please Please”, which features lyrics about an annoying spy boyfriend. “He loved the song. He's obsessed with the lyrics, and I'm so grateful for that,” he says of the track in which he famously warns, “It's one thing heartbreak/ another thing my selfishness/ Please don't embarrass me mother f–ker. “
He adds, “I don't want to sound biased, but I think he's one of the best actors of this generation. So seeing him on screen with my song as the soundtrack made the video better and even more special.”
The video is, of course, part of the completion of Carpenter's anticipated sixth studio album, Short n' Sweet (August 23), whom she refers to as the “hot older sister” of 2022 Email I can't send. “It's my second 'big girl' album. it is a partner but it is not the same. When it comes to having full creative control and being a full-fledged adult, I would consider it a second album,” he says of the previous collection, which featured the singles “Vicious,” “Nonsense” and “Fast Times.”
And, despite the fact that “Espresso” soared all the way to No. 3 on the Hot 100 and its oddly catchy hook (“That's that me, espresso”) became a ubiquitous meme this summer, Carpenter reveals that she was “totally alone” in he wanted to release it as the first single. “Not so much from my immediate team. But when it came to “the powers above,” he says in quotes about anonymous naysayers who didn’t get it, “there were a lot of questions behind whether it made sense. But in the end they trusted me and I was happy that I believed in myself at the time.”
