Watch out Harry Potter because there is another secret society of wizards going around, but unlike you and your British relatives, these people are American… and Black.
Focus Features has released the first trailer for the Kobi Libii-directed film The American Negro Magical Society starring Justice Smith and we have to say it looks like an incredible idea to make into a movie. Centered around an everyday man named Aren (Smith) trying to navigate his life in the white world, he is recruited into a secret society of black magicians, whose main purpose is to make white people live easier and more comfortable in society. No seriously.
As one of his teachers (David Alan Grier) explains to him, white people are the most “dangerous animal on the planet” whenever they feel “uncomfortable”. No lies detected there. In order to keep the Black community safe from the wrath of the whites, the wizards do everything they can to keep the white community at peace in America.
Now in the loop, Aren takes it upon himself to use his new magic to make a certain white man happier with his life at work, but things go awry when they say the white man and Aren develop feelings for the same woman. Having to choose between keeping his oath to the Magical Negro or finding love, Aren finds himself in a pickle like all The American Negro Magical Society it depends on what he chooses to do. Keep the white man happy or make himself happy.
