Alice in Chains' fourth studio album, Black gives way to blue marked a new chapter for the band. After a long hiatus and the passing of frontman Layne Staley in 2002, AIC made their brave return with a new singer, William DuVall, and eventually released their comeback LP in 2009 to great acclaim.
“There was no master plan, despite what people think,” Cantrell said. Metal hammer In July, regarding AIC’s comeback, he said, “This felt right, so we did the next thing, and then the next thing… It’s more than just making music and it always has been. We’ve been friends for a long time. We’re not doing this to please anyone. It had to be right from now on.” [points to chest].”
The band's stable lineup of DuVall, singer/guitarist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney, and bassist Mike Inez continues to tour and release new music, with the 2018 album Rainer Fog being his last full-length.
Cantrell has also been active as a solo artist. He is currently on tour supporting Bush's North American summer tour (get tickets) here) and has a new album on the way.
