Billie Eilish introduced her Hit with hard and soft era with the '90s-inspired music video for “Lunch,” in which the superstar can be seen dancing in oversized, sporty attire as she ponders the sassy lyrics.
In a new installment of Vevo's Footnotesthe 22-year-old singer gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the colorful visual, noting that the clip was “an ode to '90s music videos and all the videos I grew up loving. I've always liked the simplicity of performance and I didn't want too much going on in this video.”
He added that he was inspired by icons like Tupac, the Spice Girls and Green Day, before revealing that the hilariously unexpected challenge of filming the “Lunch” music video was, fittingly, eating the food. In the clip, she is seen snacking on various foods, including apples and cherries. “I had a huge dining table that I would take bites of and spit out all day long,” he recalls. “I should have done it from the beginning though, because at first I ate everything and got full right away. It was a bit much, but it was worth it.”
All in all, the self-directed video was meant to be simple. “I didn't want to make the video straight on the nose. I figured the lyrics spoke for themselves and then the video would be a fascinating visual to watch while listening to the lyrics. I just wanted a classic, simple video,” he shared.
In other Billie news, the star was recently announced as Spotify's most streamed monthly artist, replacing The Weeknd at the summit. Passing the 100 million monthly listeners mark in June 2024, she is the third and youngest artist ever to do so, following both The Weeknd and Taylor Swift.
