Lizzo is in Bali and may stay there for a while.
“I'm taking a gap year and protecting my peace,” the singer announced in an Instagram update posted on Sunday (August 25).
Over the weekend, Lizzo started giving fans a taste of her visit to Indonesia. In one post she teased, “Unfortunately I'll be posting too many bikini pics,” flashing her figure to the camera (no doubt feeling “good as hell”).
In an Instagram Story, Lizzo shared some fitness snaps from Bali: a clip of herself taking in some time with a jump rope on the balcony, which looked especially impressive with the video sped up.
Just before the summer, the star gave an update on her mental health, which she has been candid about over the past year amid harassment allegations and public scrutiny. (In August 2023, three former dancers on the tour filed a lawsuit against her, alleging sexual harassment and hostile working conditions. Lizzo claimed the allegations were false and called them “outrageous stories.” The lawsuit was put on hold in March pending of appeals.)
“I'm the happiest I've been in 10 months,” Lizzo wrote on Instagram in a May update. “The funny thing about depression is that you don't know you're in it until you're over it. I'm definitely not as carefree as I used to be. But the dark cloud that followed me every day is finally clearing. My smile reaches my eyes again, and that's a victory.”
Two months earlier, in March, she had expressed her dismay at the intense public criticism. “I'm tired of putting up with everyone dragging me in my life and on the internet,” Lizzo said. “All I want to do is make music and make people happy and help the world be a little bit better than I found it. But I'm starting to feel like people don't want me in it.”
At the time, the star said: “I'm constantly faced with lies being told about me for influence and exposure… being the joke every time because of how I look… being picked on by people you don't know me and don't respect my name . I didn't write about it — — AGAIN.”
Lizzo explained in a subsequent message that she is not giving up on her music career. “I just want to clarify — when I say I quit, I mean, I stopped paying attention to any negative action,” he said. “What I won't give up is the joy of my life, which is making music, connecting with people. I know I'm not alone. In no way, shape or form am I the only person who experiences this negative voice that seems to be louder than the positive one… I'm going to keep moving forward, I'm going to keep being me.”
Now Lizzo — who last released an album in 2022, Specifica set that debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and featured the Hot 100 No. 1 “About Damn Time” — seems to have a wellness reset through nature, exercise and relaxation in Bali.
