A woman is recovering from a fractured spine and rib after falling from a structure at Burning Man 2024.
Rachael Gingery fell about 20 feet from an art installation resembling a sinking ship on Saturday, which was, along with a 100-foot snake, part of an exhibit called “Naga & The Captainess.”
In a post shared on Facebook, she says she climbed a ladder to the structure's lookout post before attempting to slide down a leaning pole, around which attendants could wrap their legs. However, the weight of her backpack and coat inverted her body towards the bottom of the pole, forcing her to flip over and eventually lose control.
The next thing Gingery remembers, she said, was “waking up on the floor surrounded by doctors and unable to move.”

“I was told I went into convulsions immediately after the impact and my thoughts kept repeating over and over before I regained consciousness after a few minutes,” Gingery wrote, adding that she doesn't blame the structure's builders. “I remember lying on the ground feeling shocks of pain coursing through my body and not being able to move as they loaded me into an ambulance.”
From there, Gingery says she spent more than 16 hours in a medical tent on the beach before an ambulance transported her to the trauma unit of a Reno-area hospital. There, doctors treated her for bruises to her lung and spleen, as well as a broken spine and rib.
Reddish called The experience was “one of the scariest” of his life, but he remains in good spirits and refers to his outing at Black Rock City as his “best burn yet.” He says he expects to recover in the next six to eight weeks.
This year's Burning Man took place from August 25 to September 2.
