With her new EP, Linney reminds us why we dance: not to forget, but to remember differently.
The highly successful producer and singer-songwriter combines brooding house beats with introspective lyricism on We dancewhich She reimagines the dance floor as a space where the spirits of past pain move with the joy of the present. She brilliantly invites us to join in this dance, not as spectators, but as active participants in our own healing.
“For me, this record is about music's ability to transform tragedy into something beautiful,” says Linney. “Dance music has a pulse that mimics the heart and reminds me to keep going, no matter what I'm going through.”
Unlike a lot of hollow and heavy dance music today, the project This is not mindless escapism, but conscious confrontation. In Linney's realm, dance music is medicine for a world that has forgotten how to move through its miseries.
Full of hard-earned wisdom, We dance That's the remedy. Linney wastes no time getting her message across, kicking off the EP with the sublime title track, a euphoric cut in which she belts out, “We dance for a reason, we move to make sense of the pain.” Next comes the mesmerizing “Sequoia,” a deep house marvel in which her voice soars skyward like the majestic trees she embodies.
Linney delves even deeper into the theme of nature on “Daisies,” a sonic bouquet where her raw vocals cut through a bone-chilling bassline. Here, her lyrics paint vignettes of stubborn hope, exploring our tendency as humans to cling to beauty in unlikely places. That captivating desperation comes to a head on the following song, “Together,” a dance anthem where she pleads, “Are you scared that I’m not afraid of tomorrow? ‘Cause you’re my escape.”
