Selena Gomez is looking forward to becoming a mom one day. But in a new interview, the singer-actress revealed that she won't be able to experience the pregnancy and birth due to medical complications.
While speaking to Vanity fair in a cover story published on Monday (September 9), Gomez got candid about wanting to start a family with boyfriend Benny Blanco in the future. However, he says he won't “necessarily [be] as I envisioned it.”
“I've never said that,” he told the publication. “But unfortunately I can't carry my own children. I have many medical issues that would put my life and the baby's life at risk. That was something I had to mourn for a while.”
“I thought it would happen like it does to everyone,” continued Gomez, who has been open about her struggles with lupus since revealing her diagnosis to Bulletin board in 2015. “I'm in a much better place with it. I consider it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, both of which are huge possibilities for me.”
“I'm excited about what this trip will look like, but it's going to be a little different,” she added. “At the end of the day, I don't care. It will be mine. It will be my baby.”
The interview comes about four months after Blanco – who has been dating the Rare Beauty founder since July 2023 – told Howard Stern that having kids with his girlfriend is his “next goal” in life. “It's always a topic of conversation for me every day,” the producer added at the time.
“He can't lie,” Gomez said Vanity fair of her boyfriend's revealing appearance on the radio. “After the interview, I was dying laughing. Like, 'Anything else you wanted to put out there?'”
“I've never been loved this way,” she continued of Blanco. “It was just a light. A complete light in my life. He is my best friend. I like to tell him everything.”
The cover comes amid a busy time for Gomez, who recently moved into billionaire territory thanks to her makeup business, investments and music and acting projects, according to a Sept. 6 report from Bloomberg. She is currently nominated for an Emmy for Best Actress for her performance Only murders in the buildingthe fourth season of which premiered on August 27 and is gaining critical acclaim for its participation in Jacques Audiard's Emilia Perezwhich hits Netflix in November after premiering in May at the Cannes Film festival.
As she reiterated in the interview, however, her biggest priorities right now are her relationships. “Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, with the exception of going on a few dates,” she told the publication. “And I said, 'OK, if that's the vibe, then what's the most important thing to me?' Family.'”
