Kathy Bates has revealed that she is on the verge of retiring from acting.
In a recent interview with The New York TimesThe 76-year-old actress explained that she was ready to end her career before landing the role of Madeline Matlock in CBS' upcoming remake of Matlock.
“This is my last dance,” Bates said, explaining that she wants to regain control of this all-consuming pursuit. “Sometimes I get jealous that I have this talent. Because I can’t contain it and I just want my life.”
Those retirement plans were put on hold, however, after Bates was drawn to the script for the legal drama, in which she plays an older lawyer who takes advantage of being “almost invisible,” as her character puts it, to win cases.
“Everything I’ve prayed for, everything I’ve worked for, everything I’ve fought for, I’m suddenly being asked to use it all,” she said. “And it’s exhausting.”
Bates began her acting career in the early 1970s and found success in theatre and small television roles. Her breakthrough film was the 1990 Stephen King adaptation. Miseryin which she played Annie Wilkes. Her performance in the role earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Some of Bates' other notable performances include roles in films such as Titanic, Primary colors, and About Schmidtas well as television series that include Six feet under, Two and a half menand American Horror StoryShe received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2016.
The first season of 18 episodes of Matlock will debut September 22 on CBS and will stream on Paramount+.
