Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party, Cameron Crowe’s partially lost 1983 directorial debut aired just once at 2 a.m. on MTV. Now, a fully restored edition with an additional 20 minutes of bonus footage will hit theaters for the first time over two nights, Oct. 17 and 20. The 20th would have been Petty’s 74th birthday.
“Heartbreakers Beach Party “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers hold a special place in my heart,” Crowe said in a statement. “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers came into the making of the film with a kind of honesty filled with hilarious music that still feels fresh forty years later. It was also my first experience as a director.”
She added: “I’m so happy we’re bringing it back in all its reckless glory. The fact that it was pulled from MTV after just one 2am broadcast proves that it was an extravagant feast for fans in all the best ways. Let it go!”
The film follows Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as they record and promote their 1982 album. Long after darktheir third and final album produced by Jimmy Iovine. The trailer leans heavily into nostalgia, with brief hints of MTV executives saying something or other was inappropriate, and you can watch it below. Tom Petty's estate also commemorates the occasion with the October 18 release of Long after dark (Deluxe Edition), containing previously unreleased songs. CD and vinyl Pre-orders are currently underway. As for Crowe, last we heard he was considering making a Joni Mitchell movie.
