Another eventful week is in the books, especially for Bulletin boardwho hosted the R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players 2024 event last Thursday (September 5) to kick off an action-packed weekend.
Kendrick Lamar shook up the hip-hop zeitgeist when he was announced as the first solo Super Bowl halftime headliner when SB LIX comes to New Orleans in February 2025.
Not everyone was happy for K. Dot as the likes of Nicki Minaj, Birdman and Master P took issue with the NFL over seeing Lil Wayne in his hometown.
THE Billboard No filtering The crew broke down the whole thing on Thursday (September 12) with staff writer Kyle Denis and associate editorial director Damien Scott, with Kendrick getting the nod.
“I've always wanted Kendrick to make the Super Bowl,” Denis began. “Now he has the momentum to make this another career-defining performance for himself. He's one of our best performers… For me, there was absolutely no controversy… He's got the roster, he's got the ability. If there's anyone I trust to be our first solo rap headliner, it's Kendrick Lamar.”
Scott agreed: “It's amazing and fun to have an artist in the middle of the Super Bowl headline. From one perspective, we never had this… Kendrick had a No. 1 song this year and had one of the most exciting years of his career this year. It's narcotic to feel it so timely.”
He also defended him as the “No. 1 rapper right now,” and believes K. Dot is in album mode, so there could be even more tunes on the way. It should be noted that the episode was recorded shortly before Lamar released an untitled track on his Instagram on Wednesday night (September 11).
“I felt so ridiculous,” Scott continued of Minaj's rant. “It felt so disingenuous and contrived it was almost laughable. I think the biggest outrage was a domino. I think people were outraged because people were outraged.”
Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter The album was snubbed from nominations at the 2024 Country Music Awards, prompting outrage from the Beyhive earlier this week.
Kyle Denis believes that if Bey's goal was to get CMA nominations, she would have made a different album that was more geared toward being strictly country.
“We're missing the point Cowboy Carter it was general. If Beyoncé wanted to, she could have gotten CMA nominations,” he said. “If he had just dropped a traditional Nashville 12-track country album, no hip-hop, no R&B. That would be 12 patrons… He's 30 years old, he knows what the deal is about awards and stuff. It's not that Cowboy Carter it is.”
