Speaking openly about her long-awaited fifth album, Inhale / ExhaleRÜFÜS DU SOL paints a picture of an intimate process of reconnection, both with each other and with their music.
Appearing on Apple Music 1 The Zane Lowe ShowThe band said they recorded the long-awaited album in various locations, creating their own makeshift studios along the way. Its members no longer live in Los Angeles and had to debunk split rumors in 2022, when lead vocalist Tyrone Lindqvist mentioned “the end of a chapter for us as a unit” during a concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
Lindqvist moved to the city of Encinitas, about 25 miles north of San Diego, while his bandmates Jon George and James Hunt headed to Miami.
“The real magic started to happen when we were doing those little two-week stints in those places you just talked about, Austin, Los Angeles and Ibiza, and I think we really made the most of those two-week stints,” George told Lowe. “We were in a really good creative flow. We were reconnecting, and particularly in the studio more than ever. I think we just made the most of every minute, getting a lot of work done and with less distractions and time spent on music.”
Discussing the dichotomy between the stillness of the studio and the unfiltered ecstasy of RÜFÜS DU SOL's live performances, Hunt says the band is able to draw a line in the sand.
“We're really good at putting ourselves in other people's shoes when we make music, but at the same time we're also really good at getting into a little bubble because there's just three of us,” he explains. “We're able to create a little ecosystem where we have a lot of fun and the studio spaces we set up are playgrounds with our favorite synths. And we're all rotating, trying different things, trying out ideas.”
Hunt hints at a more dynamic sound and promises to push the boundaries of the band’s musical expression after emerging from a period of intense creative flux. Fans can anticipate a further evolution of RÜFÜS DU SOL’s signature atmospheric electronica, shaped by uninterrupted studio sessions and a renewed sense of creative freedom.
By making the most of every minute, they created an album they believe truly reflects their growth as artists, Hunt says.
“I would say this record has been a lot of fun and liberating,” she adds. “We've been pushing the boundaries of what expression of our music looks like, trying different beats, trying different rhythmic expressions, things that don't have a beat. And I feel like this album that we've created is a lot more dynamic and reflects us being more liberated… and we just referenced the music that we loved and put it on the table, trying different things, things were evolving. So it was very liberating, fun.”
Includes 15 tracks, Inhale / Exhale is the group's fifth studio album and first since 2021's album. SurrenderYesterday they released a new single, “Break My Love,” along with a music video, which you can watch here.
