My Morning Jacket have called for unity in their new single “Are't We One?”
With an anthemic piano and '60s technicolor protest vibes, “Aren't We One?” takes direct aim at American injustices. The lyrics find frontman Jim James wishing he could “get out of our nation,” as it's been consumed by what he calls in a press release “the divide-and-conquer mentality that holds us back.” In the song, he sings, “This land is supposed to offer some peace/Too many chains in the home of the free/So many lost souls searching for redemption/So many hungry hearts searching for relief.”

Co-written by James with “a little help” from Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull and MMJ keyboardist Bo Koster, “Aren’t We One?” comes with a peace-loving visualizer, which you can check out below.
The song's release heralds My Morning Jacket's upcoming live shows alongside Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. The bands are in the midst of their joint “Eye to Eye” tour (get tickets) here), and will livestream their September 18 and 19 shows from Nashville's Ascend Amphitheater in Nugs as a benefit for Number of people.
In a press release for “Aren’t We One?”, MMJ encouraged fans to “act with compassion” and register to vote through HeadCount. The band also expressed support for the Democratic candidacy of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, saying they “are working tirelessly to create a world of justice, equality, and peace.”
