Japandroids have released their new song, “All Bets Are Off,” the latest single from the indie rock duo's fourth and final album, Destiny and alcohol.
The narrative song describes a spark of romance that sparks across a bar as vocalist and guitarist Brian King sings, “We didn’t even notice all our friends left/ They were busy talking like no time had passed/ The situation made us both blush/ Stuck together, and yet somehow we never touched.”
In a statement, King said the song was inspired by a night out with his team. “I was gathering material for a book about life in a bar and it was the perfect place to watch the hungry hearts of Saturday twist into the blue void of Sunday morning,” he said. “Watching it immediately stripped me of my powers. A thousand thoughts, frozen and stored in cold storage, all defrosted at once.”
He continued, “She was not the same woman I had met, she exuded a subtle elegance and sensuality I had never seen before; she looked stunning. Every exquisite nuance was like salt on old haircuts. Plus, she was dressed elegantly, which added to my agony. The imbalance between us was obvious, which made me feel self-conscious. Still, I decided to let it play out. Let the music play.”
“All Bets Are Off” follows previous singles “D&T” and “Chicago.” Destiny and alcohol will be released on October 18th via ANTI- Records. Pre-orders are in progress.
