During the last week, the performance of a drag queen of Chapel RoanThe 'Red Wine Supernova' has ignited the internet into a debate about misogyny and drag culture. Now, the artist behind the clip is speaking out.
On Thursday (September 19), Drag Race Philippines star Brigade took to social media to talk about her controversial performance of Roan's song. “My recent performance of 'Red Wine Supernova' has sparked many different opinions,” he said. he wrote on X. “Some accused me of being misogynistic and disrespectful, while others saw it as campy and true to the essence of attraction.”
THE clip in question saw Brigiding standing on a table during a drag brunch and lip-syncing to the dance floor The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. As she reaches the song's chorus, Brigiding lifts her skirt and opens a spigot attached to her underwear, letting a stream of red wine flow out into a wine glass held by a fan.
The show quickly went viral as fans and critics began to debate whether the show was appropriate. Some commenters claimed the show openly mocked the concept of menstruation, while others quickly defended Brigiding, saying the show wasn't making fun of women or periods, but was just a fun rendition of a pop song.
In her statement, Brigiding did not apologize for her performance, instead choosing to celebrate the artist who made it possible. “As a drag artist, I look for artists who fearlessly create spaces for us, the queer community, and right now, @chappellroan is an amazing champion,” she wrote. “[Chappell’s] The music speaks to the freedom and creativity that I try as much as I can to bring to my performances as an artist. I intended to celebrate her influence and impact, not to offend anyone, especially women.”
She added in the bottom line of her post that the point of attraction is to “break gender stereotypes” and give people a place to celebrate “freedom in artistic self-expression.” Nodding to the “Pink Pony Club” singer's lyrics, she captioned her post with a wink: “I'll keep dancing.”
