Detroit, Michigan Emcee Big Trip reunites with Jamil Honesty for his 4th EP. Member of the collective The Umbrella, presented in 2021 from his first EP Bullet Tooth Tony followed by another Crasseux & of course the full length debut album Filth Be Thy Name. All of this showed the underground what Big Trip was capable of on his own, but Honestly Filthy would exalt him & the sequel here it is configured to maintain the classic caliber that arrived over 4 months ago.
The piano-driven boom bap intro speaks of everyone else who can't come out until told, while “Wave Runners” featuring Jamil Honesty & Snotty finds the trio aggressively referring to themselves as trendsetters. “Kenny Lofton” follows the inspired route of boom bap instrumentals to spell pain with a gold glove before “Ice Wood” with Mvck Nyce paying tribute to the late, great Blade Icewood.
“Clout Chasers” jumps over a vocal sample observing a drought in the real here and now, while “In the Filth We Trust” returns to boom bap talking to dig it out of the mud with no luck. “Gold Mouth” with Mickey Diamond maintains a dusty edge coming their way together, but then the outro brings back the same beat as the intro, so Trip brings it back saying he's destined to shine.
What did he do? Honestly Filthy the best entry in Big Trip's entire discography for me personally was the fact that it vastly improved on everything you've heard from him before, and the sequel takes it to a whole new level. His hard-hitting lyricism and Jamil Honesty's boom bap production from their predecessor continue, except their chemistry is further enhanced.
