Both comedy and radio lost a giant with the death of Wanda Smith over the weekend. He was only 58.
The popular Atlanta radio personality died Saturday, a day after celebrating her 58th birthday. Wanda Smith was a beloved figure in ATL during her two-plus decades in radio.
Atlanta's V-103 The radio's Senior Vice President and Market Director Rick Caffey announced the sad news in an Instagram post, writing, “Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the loss of our beloved Wanda Smith, someone who always made us smile and was a big part of V-103 for years. We extend our deepest prayers and condolences to her family.”
Per FOX 5 AtlantaSmith began hosting the Frank and Wanda in the morning debut in 1998 for V-103, formerly known as WVEE-FM. He held that position for over two decades before being fired in 2019.
According to the Atlanta-Constitution Journalher only time off was in 2013. she returned to co-present with Ryan Cameron the following year.
Smith also gained exposure as a comedian. He wrote about her Def Comedy Jam TV series and BET's Comicview and had weekly comedy sets at the Atlanta Comedy Theatre.
He also appeared on Tyler Perry's Madea goes to jail and Madea Witness Protection.
Wanda Smith had more than a viral moment with Katt Williams
For those who didn't know Smith, she hit the social media timelines because of her interview with Katt Williams, which featured a exchange between the two comedians.
Fans took to social media to give Smith flowers and remind people that it was so much more than just a Katt Williams moment. he was a legend.
“I think it's totally crazy Wanda Blacksmith she died and all people can do is talk about her interview with Katt Williams and how she grilled her. Disrespectful,” wrote a user on X, formerly Twitter.
Another user wrote“please do not reduce Wanda of Smith LONG career up to that moment, he's a radio icon and always will be.”
