Matthew Sweet is raising funds for health care after being hospitalized for a debilitating stroke on Oct. 12 while on tour in Toronto supporting Hanson. With proper care, estimated to cost $250,000, he is expected to make a full recovery, wrote Catherine Lyons, his manager. GoFundMe. As of October 23, the tally stands at $167,000.
Lyons clarified that Sweet was “unexpectedly and tragically forced off the road and into a long, uncertain road to recovery. We are asking for financial help at this difficult time from his family, friends and fans. With no insurance or income from touring, Matthew faces a huge financial burden. Doctors and hospital care in Toronto were instrumental in saving Matthew's life, but health care is not free for Americans in Canada. He must now be flown back to the United States by air ambulance with medical personnel to a specialized rehabilitation center, where he will receive 24-hour care and treatment for six weeks. He will then need months of treatment and rehabilitation which will hopefully lead to a full recovery. Needless to say, the cost for all this treatment will be overwhelming.”
Sweet rose to fame in the 1980s Athens, Georgia, scene with the landmark power-pop album Girlfriend and Altered beast. His latest release is the 2021 LP Catspaw.
