In a recent interview with Show Zach SangBig Sean gave Detroit OG Eminem his props by comparing him to Goku from Dragon Ball Z.
When asked what he had learned from Em, Sean replied, “What dedication is.” He added, “Eminem is the biggest rapper in the world and he's in the studio every day, every day he can be there. He is committed to it. He cares about rapping like Goku cares about fighting. Eminem is in this mug, in this studio, every day, dawg.”
Sean then told an anecdote about one of the first times they worked together when he hesitated to ask the Detroit legend for an autograph. “We were eating Jet's Pizza in the studio watching South Park“, he began. “At the end of the session, I was almost done with my verse, and he said, 'I'm going to get out of here,' it was late. And I'm a big Eminem fan, obviously. i still have Marshall Mathers LP, Slim Shady LP, Show Eminem — the actual CDs, and I was going to bring them in for them to sign, and I didn't 'cause I thought, 'This is probably a bit of a favorite.'
And he continued: “Well, at the end of the session, [Eminem] he rips my CD and says, “Yeah, can you sign them?” He was like, 'It's not for me, though,'” Sean recalled. “That was a lesson then. I'm like, “Bro, never be too cool to be a fan of what you fan dawg.” … I couldn't believe it. I was like, 'Wow, what a guy.'”
Eminem's work ethic is the stuff of legend. Akon once told a story about how Em treats the studio like a 9-5 job. “Working with him made me look at the business differently because he was the first artist I worked with who treated the business like a real job.” he explained while appearing on Hot 97's Evros in the morning. “He goes into the studio at 9 in the morning every day, takes his lunch break at 1 and is out of there at 5 in the afternoon, it's like a schedule.”
Big Sean recently dropped his first album since 2020 Better Me Than You in August.
