Primus fans have been left reeling after the band's drummer, Tim “Herb” Alexander, unexpectedly left the band.
In a message shared on social media On October 29, Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde revealed that Alexander had abruptly resigned on October 17 via email “effective immediately,” citing a “loss of passion for the game”—a reason Claypool and LaLonde admitted “It was a complete shock. .”
“Following a great spring and summer of touring and some great plans ahead of us, it was a little confusing for us to have Herb leave so abruptly,” said Claypool and LaLonde.
“After several attempts to contact Herb, his only response was another email saying he had 'lost his passion for the game.' As disappointing as this is, we respect his choice and it forced us to make some tough decisions.”
Primus will go ahead with their New Year's Eve show in Oakland, California, recruiting members of Claypool's other acts Holy Mackerel and Frog Brigade for a “special, unique event.”
Additionally, for the upcoming Dominican Republic festival, they will be joined by Tool drummer Danny Carey. Heading into 2025, Primus will launch a search for the 'Greatest Drummer on Earth' to join them on Maynard James Keenan's second leg Sessanta tour.
Alexander's exit marks the end of an era for Primus, whose musical legacy is filled with chart-topping moments and fan favorites that have kept them thriving since the '90s.
Primus' journey into the musical world is as bold and unpredictable as their sound. They made their Billboard hit with Sailing the Seas of Cheese in 1991, and until 1993, their offbeat style consistently resonated with fans. Their third studio album, Pork sodadebuted at an impressive No. 7 on the Billboard 200, proving there was a place for Primus' funk-infused rock in the mainstream. The success didn't stop there –Stories from the Punchbowl it reached the Billboard top 10 as well.
Singles like “My Name Is Mud” and “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” brought the band even more attention, becoming alternative radio and MTV staples. And despite their unusual style, Primus earned platinum certifications from the RIAA for Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Pork soda.
