Kompany has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, the DJ and producer revealed this week.
The disease, also known as chronic kidney failure, occurs when the kidneys gradually become damaged over time and cannot properly perform their typical functions, such as removing waste and normalizing blood pressure, according to the National Kidney Foundation. Advanced cases can progress to end-stage renal failure, which is fatal.
Kompany, whose real name is Kyle Hagberg, lamented the condition in a statement shared on his social media. The electronic music virtuoso, a talented producer and sound designer universally revered in the dubstep scene, says the illness has “taken a pretty heavy toll” on both his physical and mental health, and he may need to slow down. his tours while he adapts. .
“I'm grateful to have an idea of what's going on now so I can better deal with it, but adjusting to this new reality has been difficult for me,” Hagberg writes. “Music has always been my passion and my outlet, and while I'm still here creating and playing shows, I may have to slow down at times.”
Despite the diagnosis, Kompany has had a great 2024, releasing six singles. The year also saw him perform at Colorado's iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater and the Amsterdam Dance Event, the world's largest electronic music summit, among other high-profile venues.
The DJ also urged fans to prioritize their health and get regular checkups. Early detection could help prevent kidney disease from progressing to kidney failure, according to Mayo Clinic.
“Please let my experience serve as a reminder: take good care of yourselves,” he added. “Get a checkup, listen to your body, and don't ignore things that feel 'wrong'.”
